More attacks by Boko Haram Islamic terrorists in northern Nigeria kill at least 8. Tension between Christian and animist southerners and northern Muslim settlers. Christian President Goodluck Jonathan contesting primaries in January

A radical Islamist sect attacked a police vehicle in northeastern Nigeria, killing seven people, in the latest in a string of attacks by the group in the last week, the military said on Thursday.

A military spokesman said the Boko Haram group was behind the attack on Wednesday, in which the police vehicle was "burned to ashes" at a bus station in the Dala area of Maiduguri. Eight people were wounded.

Nine people died this week in two other Boko Haram attacks in Maiduguri, a city in one of Nigeria's poorest regions near its northeastern borders with Cameroon, Chad and Niger.

Jonathan [President Goodluck Jonathan] can ill afford a security crisis, as any unrest in Africa's most populous nation is likely to be used by his rivals [as he contests ruling party primaries in January for the April presidential election] to undermine his credibility.

The tension is rooted in decades of resentment between indigenous groups, mostly Christian or animist, who are vying for control of fertile farmlands and economic and political power with migrants and settlers from the north [Reuters failed to mention it but the northerners are Muslims].

"Eight people, including three policemen were killed late Wednesday in five separate attacks by gunmen suspected to be members of Boko Haram sect," the spokesman [army spokesman lieutenant Abubakar Abdullahi] added.

"The policemen were killed in Ruwan Zafi district of Maiduguri in an attack on a police patrol team by suspected Boko Haram sect members who also burnt down the patrol van," he said.

Comments: Will the same sort of violence also happen in the West between the natives and Muslim immigrant settlers? Or is it happening already?

It could be that Boko Haram is being helped by Muslims opposed to President Jonathan being re-elected, in order to undermine him.

The fact that Maiduguri is so poor might be due to Islamism, and not that poor people there are turning to terrorism due to poverty, as terror excusers claim. Islamism causes both poverty, through various restrictions and superstitions, and terrorism, and as a result, even more poverty. It's a vicious Islamism-poverty-terrorism cycle that only gets worse.
