Update: Linda Norgrove killed by grenade thrown by rescuers during rescue attempt in Afghanistan

News update: It has now emerged that Linda Norgrove died from the blast of a grenade thrown by those attempting her rescue.1 This corrects the earlier reports that her captors killed her during the rescue operation.2

Despite this unfortunate accident, the rescuers should be commended for risking their lives in attempting to save Linda's. She also should not have put herself in danger by traveling to such a dangerous region of the country.

Linda was kidnapped last month and held hostage by Mullah Bair and Mullah Keftan, who were themselves killed in the operation.2 Before being kidnapped, Linda worked for the aid organisation DAI, and was involved in a US funded project to reduce reliance on opium economy.3
