Islamic dumbing down - Restrictions on 12 un-Islamic university subjects in Iran

Iran has announced a ban on universities from opening new departments1 in 12 humanities subjects considered too “Western”2 and not in “harmony”3 with Islam. It also plans to revise the content of existing courses in these subjects by up to 70 per cent4 to make them “compatible”5 with Islam. The subjects targeted includes human rights, law, management, philosophy, political science, psychology, sociology and women's studies.6,7 The move comes after Iran's Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei called for action saying the many humanities subjects based on “materialism disbelieving the divine Islamic teachings”8 will lead students to “doubt”9 Islam. Two million out of a total of 3.5 million Iranian university students are studying humanities.
