The killers are suspected to be either her relatives (reacting after discovering her conversion) or those action for them.
Farah had fled her parents in the village of Bardher in Gedo Region to live with relatives in Abudwaq, after they tortured her with severe beating and shackled her to a tree during the day for leaving Islam and converting to Christianity.
Her conversion was treated as madness by her father, Hassan Kafi Ilmi, and mother, Hawo Godane Haf, who took her to a doctor and forced her to take the prescribed medication for "mental illness".
The traditional Somali cure of reciting the Koran to her was also tried along with an offer of forgiveness to return to Islam, but all without success.

There are two other similar cases posted on this site. (There are so many others not on this site of course.)
The first story is that of Russian soldier Yevgeny Aleksandrovich Rodionov, 18, who according to his mother was beheaded by Chechen Muslims on video camera for refusing to convert to Islam.
The second is story is that of Father Taher Saadallah Boutros, 32, who according to a witness was killed by being shot in the head after terrorists who seized Our Lady of Salvation Church in Baghdad during a Sunday service told him "Convert to Islam because in any case you will die".
In other cases, currently Musa Sayed, 45, and Ahmad Shah, 50, are facing death penalty in Afghanistan for leaving Islam and converting to Christainity.
Ex-Muslim Atheist Palestinian, Walid Husayin, faced calls to be executed for leaving Islam. (But Husayin is safe for now since the Palestinians currently are at their PR best trying to win recognition for a Palestinian state.) There was also a claim that he was suffering from depression, suggesting that Muslims see those who leave or criticize Islam as suffering from psychological problems.
In Pakistan, Christian woman, Asia Bibi, was pressured to convert to Islam.
And Moroccan girl Keyek or Ruby,17, who was involved in a sex scandal with the Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, said that she fled from her Muslim father in Italy after he beat her for wishing to leave Islam and convert to Christianity by becoming a Catholic
In Somalia, a Christian girl, Anab Ghelle Hassan, 15, was kidnapped by al Shabaab terrorists on 15-Feb-2010.

It now seems common for Muslims to accuse those leaving Islam as suffering from mental illness.
Husayin is alleged here to be suffering from depression. Abdul Rahman, an Afghan convert to Christianity from Islam, was alleged by some to be mentally unfit during his 2006 trial for apostasy, which is punishable by death in Afghanistan.
This is similar to what atheist Soviet Communists did in the past with “Punitive psychiatry” that labeled those who do not subscribe to their atheist totalitarian ideology as mentally ill.
